Himachal Pradesh Governor Urmila Singh Monday visited a centuries-old Buddhist monastery in the Spiti Valley, and appreciated its architecture.
Addressing the gathering, she said the culture of the valley was unique and has been preserved by the local people over the centuries.
"Every effort should be made to preserve the rich culture and traditions as they are our identity."
The monastery is located atop a hill at an altitude of 13,668 ft. It is the biggest in the Spiti Valley and commands a huge respect in the region.
The governor went around the Gompa complex and appreciated the paintings, murals and architecture of the monastery. She also witnessed the traditional Chhamb dance of monks.
Legislator Ravi Thakur honoured the governor with traditional shawl and a cap, and thanked her for the concern towards the people of the area, mostly Buddhists.
The climatic conditions of the area are harsh as much of the land falls under a cold desert where the mercury drops to below minus 20 degrees Celsius during winter.
The picturesque Spiti Valley, some 350 km from capital Shimla, is the prime location of ancient Buddhist monasteries in the state.
Mane, Dhankar, Tabo, Gungri, Mud, Lidang, Rangrik, Key, Losar and Hikkim are the prominent monasteries in the area.
