Hoax call to Attorney General: Police yet to register FIR

Delhi Police are yet to register an FIR in the case of a hoax call made to Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati earlier this month by a woman claiming to be Congress president Sonia Gandhi and saying the government was not happy with his work.

Sources in Delhi Police said that it was a 10 minute call made on the landline number of Vahanvati by the woman who claimed that she was speaking from US.

The call later turned to be a hoax after which the case was handed over to Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Vahanvati's complaint, but a first information report is yet to be registered as the preliminary enquiry is not ended, according to a police official.

In his complaint, sources said, Vahanvati had said that the woman caller was not "happy" with the important cases he was handling as a government's lawyer in the Supreme Court, which, according to her, had created a controversy.

The caller suggested Vahanvati "should lie low for a few days" and let his deputy Amarjeet Singh Chandhok take over.

Vahanvati got suspicious when he came to know that Gandhi was in US for a medical checkup and it was not possible that she would interfere in such an issue from there at a time when she needs rest.

Sources also confirmed that they have identified the caller as a government employee, known for her accurate imitation of Gandhi's voice, but police is yet to question her.

An investigating officer of the case had also said that at least five calls were made on Vahanvati's land line earlier this month but he attended only one in the beginning of September.

According to a police officer, before registering FIR in the case, they want to confirm that whether the government official made the call to Vahanvati from her landline number herself or was someone trying to trap her.
