India and Maldives on Wednesday reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral relations and agreed to deepen cooperation in all sectors including defence, security and counter-terrorism and boost investment in the tourism sector in Maldives.
Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar as a special envoy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on a two visit to Maldives from February 21-22, called on President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen, and also met the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Asim.
"During the meetings, both sides reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral relations and agreed to impart fresh momentum for further deepening mutually beneficial cooperation across a wide spectrum," said a Ministry of External Affairs release.
"The discussions focussed on areas of defence and security, counter-terrorism and economic ties including substantial investment in the tourism sector in Maldives. There was also discussion on developmental partnership, capacity building, youth and cultural exchange," it added.
Akbar conveyed India's support for a stable, democratic and prosperous Maldives.
During the last visit of the President of Maldives to India in April, 2016, the two countries signed six agreement including double taxation avoidance agreement and exchange of information relevant to tax administration and enforcement.
President Yameen appreciated consistent Indian support to Maldives and reiterated the high priority attached by his Government to India in keeping with their 'India First policy'.
President Yameen conveyed that Maldives attaches high importance to its close relations with India. In this regard, the President expressed confidence that Akbar's visit will open new avenues for stronger cooperation between the two countries, and that the Maldives will receive the same level of support, engagement and assistance in the years ahead, said a statement from the President's Office.
Akbar was accompanied by the Ambassador of India to the Maldives Akilesh Sharma and other senior officials.
