Indian-origin man takes NZ$100,000 catch

An Indian-origin man in New Zealand Wednesday won NZ$100,000 after clasping a huge six from all-rounder Corey Anderson during the second India-New Zealand one-day international (ODI) match in Hamilton.

Jatinder Singh, 23, from Te Aroha in Hamilton, has become the second winner of the competition, after Michael Morton from the city won the prize in the fifth ODI against the West Indies earlier this month at Seddon Park cricket stadium, Fairfax New Zealand reported.

In three other ODIs and two T20s against the Windies for which the competition was held, no one won the prize.

To take part in the contest, one has to purchase a Tui T-shirt and a lanyard and take a clean one-handed catch during any of the international limited overs cricket matches in this South Pacific island nation this summer.

The first person to do so at each game wins the money.

Singh, who used to play cricket for the Te Aroha club before it folded up last season due to lack of players, had bought the last available T-shirt to take part in the contest.

He thanked his friend Dexter, who convinced him to sit in their spot high on the bank and a bit straighter than where Singh had wanted to sit.

When Anderson smashed Indian pacer Ishant Sharma on to the embankment, the ball came straight to him and he clasped it.

"To be honest, I got up and didn't think it was going to make it as far as me, I thought it was going to land short, so then I sort of gave up on it, and then it kept going and next thing I know it was in my right hand. Really, it happened so fast," Singh was quoted as saying.

Singh's mother, who was born in India, said the timing of winning the money could not have been better as he was about to do graduation in management from the University of Waikato.
