In a bid to deliberate on critical criminology issues, prevention of crime and deviance in the 21st century, criminology experts from 50 countries have joined together for the 18th World Congress of Criminology, held for the first time in India, here.

Organised jointly by O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) and the International Society of Criminology, the three-day event will focus on the Criminological Opportunities and Challenges of the 21st Century in light of the current trends in Urbanisation, Globalisation, Development and Crime.

"This conference has a very resonant theme today because we are talking of criminology in the context of globalisation. We are one people, we are one world, we are all networked, but the dangers of a networked age are that the impacts of crime are multiplied manifold," Supreme Court Judge Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, said in a statement.

He highlighted urbanisation as the leading challenge to governance and rule of law.

"The growth of urbanisation has posed very grave challenges to the enforcement of law and justice in our country. The law is but one important facet of societal governance under the regime of law, however there is a great deal to be achieved in terms of the involvement of civil society in the enforcement of law and the realisation of rights," Chandrachud added.

The global congress, which will be held from Dec 16-18, will witness the participation of 700 leading criminology experts, lawyers, scholars, academics and professionals from from 68 international universities and over 70 Indian universities and institutions.
