European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini here said that the latest developments in Yemen was putting the promises of the Yemeni transition in jeopardy.
She made the remarks Friday in a statement when commenting on the resignation Thursday of the president of Yemen as well as the Yemeni prime minister and his cabinet, coupled with the violence in several provinces of Yemen, Xinhua reported.
The EU considered that the implementation of the roadmap provided by the Peace and National Partnership Agreement and the Gulf Cooperation Council Initiative on which Prime Minister Khaled Bahah's government's solid program to address Yemen's urgent fiscal, economic and institutional challenges was based, should remain a reference for the transition, she said.
Mogherini said the EU stood by the Yemeni people at this critical juncture, noting that the "Yemeni people deserve democratic and unitary institutions responding to their legitimate aspirations."
Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and Prime Minister Khaled Bahah rendered their resignations Thursday amid mounting pressure by the Houthi militants who have been tightening their grip on power.
Tensions mounted in Yemen's capital of Sanaa Wednesday as the Houthi group took over the presidential palace in southern Sanaa Tuesday after clashed with presidential guards that left nine people killed and 79 others injured.
