A young male leopard was found dead on Tuesday in a metal snare meant to trap wild boars near a village here, officials said.
Forest Department officials said that the leopard could have accidentally got trapped in the metal snare near Wadaval village in Bicholim sub districton on Monday and died after much struggle on Tuesday.
"The leopard was around four to five years old and the cause of death will be formally established after a forensic examination. Prima facie, it appears that the animal died to to internal haemmorage after it was caught in the trap," a Forest Department spokesperson told reporters here.
Not far from Bicholim, 30 km from Panaji, a full-grown tiger was similarly found dead some years ago in a metal snare, often planted on game trails by poachers to trap wild boars, much sought for its meat, which fetches a high value.
