A 43-year-old man died following a violent clash between fans of Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna.

Madrid's Clinico San Carlos hospital said the man, identified as a Deportivo fan, died Sunday of injuries sustained in the fight after rival fan groups clashed near Atletico's Vicente Calderon stadium, reported Xinhua.

"Today is one of the saddest for Spanish football in recent years. It has been despicable," said Deportivo coach Victor Fernandez.

Atletico Madrid said in a statement that it condemned the violence.

Atletico Madrid beat Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 in the match.
