A 39-year-old man died after being attacked by an elephant in northern West Bengal on Sunday, officials said.
Kishore Rai died in the elephant attack in Uttar Khaerbari of Alipurduar district's Madarihat on Sunday morning.
Angry residents put up a road blockade from Totopara to Madarihat in protest against the killing. However, the blockade was withdrawn when the forest department paid a part of the compensation to the family of the deceased, officials said.
Meanwhile, the carcass of an adult elephant was found on Sunday by forest staff in Nagrakata forest of Jalpaiguri district.
Locals claimed the elephant's body was lying at the spot in Tondu Goth under Central Diana Range for the past three days.
Ranger Subhasish Chattopadhyay said the body bore no injuries and both its tasks were intact.
The exact cause of death of the around 35-year-old elephant could be ascertained after a post-mortem examination, Chattopadhyay said.
