A man was shot dead by South Korean military Monday while he was attempting to cross a river to enter North Korea, said the South Korean defence ministry.

"As of 2.23 p.m., a man dived into Imjin river, attempting to cross over to North Korea (DPRK)," Xinhua quoted an official at the ministry of defence as saying.

The river runs near the heavily militarised border, an official in Seoul said.

The man was shot as he ignored the military warnings.

The identity of the man is yet to be established.
