A man was shot dead early Sunday in West Bengal's Burdwan district, after he came to the rescue of his two teenaged sisters who were being harassed by goons who had forced their entry into the house.
The incident occurred in Katwa in the district, about 150 km from the state capital.
"A gang of four or five people barged into the house and tried to molest the two girls. When their brother intervened, he was shot dead," a police officer said.
The two girls said that the miscreants first tried to abduct them. When they resisted, the goons began to molest them. Their brother protested, and the goons shot him dead in front of the girls.
No arrest has so far been made.
