Manipur Chief Secretary Oinam Nabakishore tendered his resignation on Friday after being transferred as Director General of the Officers Training Academy. Another IAS officer R.R. Rashmi was appointed the new Chief Secretary.

Protests are being held and women activists blocked the highway at Ningthoukhong in Bishnupur district, the hometown of Nabakishore, for the second day on Friday in protest against the transfer.

Nabakishore, an IAS officer of the 1984 batch was appointed the Chief Secretary on September 30, 2015. He is the first Chief Secretary from among the Meiteis, the majority community.

Citing "personal reasons" Nabakishore said that he was taking voluntary retirement effective from October 9 this year. "I have no grudge or complaint against the appointment of the new Chief Secretary. In fact I am exhausted after doing official work for 30 years", he said.

He also appealed to the people to maintain peace and not launch protests, adding that he would chalk out his future plans soon. This comment comes amidst speculation that he may join politics.

Meanwhile the Manipur People's Party and the Kangleipak Students' Organisation have condemned the transfer of Nabakishore.

In a statement the MPP said, "It is very unfortunate that the first Chief Secretary from among the majority community is unceremoniously transferred away. After the formation of the BJP-led government the locals are being slighted."

Some senior opposition politicians said that there is more than meets the eye in this issue and hinted that soon various campaigns will be launched.
