Manufacturers need to improve quality of buses: Official

The government on Thursday called upon manufacturers to improve the "quality of buses" to motivate car owners to use more of public transport.

Public transport reforms and regulations are needed to achieve this objective in the light of exponential increase in number of cars, according to Abhay Damle, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.

"Sense of respect has to be brought in for shared mobility or public transport... this can trigger a few regulations to improve the quality of buses, so that car owners are also motivated to shift to (use) buses," Damle said at the 57 SIAM Annual Convention 2017 held here.

"(This) will call for better acceleration for the buses, better power-to-weight ratio for the buses, more comfort..."

Damle said that similar reforms are also required for other heavy vehicles like trucks.
