Malaga former footballer Marcelo Romero was named the new head coach of the Spanish club to succeed Juande Ramos.

The 40-year-old Uruguayan, who was appointed on Wednesday, worked as assistant coach to Javi Gracia in 2014-15 and 2015-16, and has been one of the staff members working under Ramos during the current season, reports Efe.

Romero played for Malaga between 2001 and 2007, with which he won the Intertoto Cup in 2002.

He also led Malaga in a few matches last season when Gracia was suspended.
