Mexico climbs four rungs in FIFA rankings

Mexico climbed four spots to 20th while Chile slipped three rungs to 15th in the latest FIFA rankings.

The November rankings Thursday showed that Mexico's recent qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil gave the team a total of 892 points, pushing it up on the list to land just behind France, in 19th place with 893 points, reports Xinhua.

Seven Latin American countries are among the top 20 teams including top-ranked Argentina in third place with 1,251 points, fourth placed Colombia with 1,200 points, sixth placed Uruguay with 1,132 points and Brazil, which moved up one spot to 10th with 1,102 points.

Elsewhere, the United States dropped a rung to 14th with 1,019 points, followed by Chile in 15th with 1,014.

Across the Atlantic, Spain remains in first place where it has been for 39 consecutive months. Germany is No.2 with 1,318 points, Portugal fifth (1,200), Italy seventh (1,120), Switzerland eighth (1,113) and the Netherlands ninth (1,106).

The next and last FIFA rankings for 2013 will be released Dec 19.
