Two policemen were killed here Saturday by militants in a hit-and-run attack, police sources said.
"Two police constables were shot dead from close range in the Hari Singh High Street market by militants. A girl was wounded in the attack. She has been shifted to a hospital," a police officer said.
The crowded market was deserted immediately after the firing as security forces cordoned off the area for searches.
No guerrilla group has owned responsibility for the attack.
A high alert has already been sounded in the city as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi are arriving on a two-day visit to the state June 25.
Security forces Friday carried out a search operation in Lal Chowk area for the first time in many months in view of the high profile visit.
