Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tributes to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 24th death anniversary.

"Paying tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary," Modi tweeted.

Gandhi was assassinated in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu in May 1991 during an election meeting by a woman suicide bomber of the now vanquished Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

He served as the prime minister from October 31, 1984 to December 2, 1989.
