Uttar Pradesh's ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and PWD Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav on Sunday inaugurated the 660 MW first unit of the Lalitpur Power Generation Company Ltd (LPGCL).
Addressing a public rally later, Mulayam Singh, a former state chief minister, said his party's government had always worked for improvement in the power sector and would continue to do so.
"It is one state where maximum development work is being done," he said while lauding his brother Shivpal Singh Yadav and son and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav for fulfilling the promises made in the election manifesto.
Akhilesh Yadav was scheduled to be present too but could not make it.
The inaugurated unit is part of a 1,980 MW super-critical thermal power plant at Mirchwara.
LPGCL, a part of the Bajaj group, had signed an MoU with the Uttar Pradesh government in April 2010 for setting up three 660 MW units of a state-of-art super critical thermal power plant.
While the first unit has now been commissioned successfully, the other units are in advanced stage of completion and are scheduled for commissioning soon, Bajaj Group vice-chairman Kushagra Bajaj told IANS.
The main plant package is being executed by BHEL while other important packages have been undertaken by L&T, Paharpur and Simplex, officials said. The power produced from this project will be supplied to the UP discoms as per regulated tariff.
