Myanmar President U Thein Sein Tuesday ordered the release of more than 3,000 prisoners serving various terms in the country, a leading Myanmar daily reported.

The ministry of information said the sentences of the freed inmates, including 58 foreigners, were cut in accordance with the presidential amnesty order, said The New Light of Myanmar.

The ministry said the move was made in view of the country's stability, rule of law as well as on humanitarian grounds.

Earlier in January this year, more than 14,000 prisoners were released under an amnesty order. In 2013, the government freed 354 political prisoners after a scrutiny.
