The 17th Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Wednesday urged to reform the UN Security Council "in line with an overhaul of the international economic and financial institutions".

Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal during his opening speech urged NAM member states to mobilise all their energy to reform the UN Security Council.

"Strengthening the role of the General Assembly and the reform of the Security Council to go in line with an overhaul of the international economic and financial institutions should continue to mobilize all our energy," Xinhua quoted him as saying.

"It is essential to focus our efforts for a more balanced and more united human globalization, with a view to share the fruits of universal progress for all mankind," he added.

Sellal also called on the 120 NAM member states to continue working together to eradicate terrorism in the world. "It is of utmost importance that our Movement continues its commitment of solidarity to work together to eradicate this transnational scourge," he noted.

The conference concluded its first day of meeting in Algiers Wednesday focusing on issues like anti-terrorism, fight against cross-border crime, and reform of the United Nations.
