The Bharatiya Janata Party's Delhi unit chief Manoj Tiwari on Tuesday said that the New Year will open the gates for economic progress of the country.

"We should keep faith that the New Year will open the gates for economic progress of the country," Tiwari said while addressing a traders' meeting here on demonetisation and mobile banking.

His remarks follow the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government's November 8 decision to demonetise the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.

He also said that poverty is the main problem for both the Hindus and the Muslims.

"Poverty is the main problem of both the Hindus and the Muslims and instead of fighting amongst themselves, they should come together to fight poverty and illiteracy," Tiwari, who also represents the Delhi northeast constituency in the Lok Sabha, said.

Tiwari said that he entered politics due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Watching him work, I understood that he has an unparalleled commitment towards eradication of corruption, black money and poverty which made me join politics," he said.

Tiwari said, "Modi government is committed to the poor and to uplift them 25 crore Jan Dhan accounts were opened. Social welfare schemes as well as loans were extended to the poor through these accounts."

Tiwari said that in his first address in Parliament, Modi had made it clear that his government's main commitment will be towards eradication of poverty.

Before arriving for the meeting, Tiwari travelled in the Delhi Metro from the Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate Metro station and interacted with the passengers on demonetisation.
