Polling began on Thurday in Denmark's parliamentary elections.

The polling stations opened at 9 a.m., as over four million registered voters trickled in to cast their ballots, Xinhua reported.

The voters will elect 179 members of the unicameral Danish parliament also known as the "Folketing".

According to sources, the centre-left Social Democrat party headed by Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, and the centre-right opposition party, Ventre led by former premier, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, appear to be neck and neck.

A poll released on Tuesday put the Social Democrats and their four coalition partners - on 50.1 percent and the centre-right bloc - led by Rasmussen on 49.9 percent.
