Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar will on Friday formally hand over a home-grown Akash missile system installed here to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The surface-to-air Akash can target aircraft up to 30 km away at altitudes of up to 18,000 metres.
Designed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and produced by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), the system, already installed at the station, will be formally handed over to the Indian Air Force by Parrikar, officials said.
Gwalior is one of the major IAF bases and is home to two squadrons of Mirage fighter planes.
Akash systems are also in place at Pune (Maharashtra), Hashimara (West Bengal), Tezpur and Jorhat (Assam) stations of Indian Air Force.
Parrikar, meanwhile, will also be visiting Lucknow on Thursday. The defence minister is a Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh.
