Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called upon people to "collectively work" to conserve forests, saying more forests will lead to more water resources which will ultimately help farmers and future generations.
"On International Day of Forests, let us pledge to collectively work to conserve forests and increase green cover," he said in a tweet.
"This year's theme 'Forests & Water' is very relevant. More forests mean more water resources, which benefits farmers & future generations," he said in another tweet.
Meanwhile at a function here, Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar said that every individual should plant at least 10 to 15 trees during their lifetime.
"This will help create an oxygen bank," he said, adding that without cooperation of citizens, it is not possible to bring improvement in the environment quality and enhance the scientific management of forests.
Speaking on the occasion, Delhi Environment and Forests Minister Imran Hussain said that the Delhi government will spare no effort to make the capital more green.
Both Javadekar and Hussain also planted trees on the occasion.
Javadekar also released a Heritage Map.
