Queen Elizabeth II on Friday commissioned British Prime Minister David Cameron to form the government after his party won the general election securing a majority in the House of Commons.

Accompanied by his wife Samantha, Cameron arrived at the queen's residence on Friday in the early afternoon, Efe news agency reported.

Against all pre-election forecasts, the Conservatives won 331 seats in the House of Commons, the majority being secured at 326 seats, allowing the party to govern alone.

Cameron went to the royal residence to fulfil the rite of communicating the election results to the queen, who in turn entrusted him to form the new government.

Over the course of her nearly six-decade reign, Queen Elizabeth II has commissioned 12 prime ministers, the first of whom was Winston Churchill, from the same party as Cameron.
