Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the historic Quit India Movement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday remembered the freedom fighters who took part in the movement and urged people to take pledge to free India from poverty, corruption and terrorism.
"On the 75th anniversary of the historic Quit India movement, we salute all the great women and men who took part in the movement," Modi tweeted.
The Prime Minister said the entire nation came together with the aim of attaining freedom under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.
"In 1942, the need of the hour was to free India from colonialism. Today, 75 years later, the issues are different."
"Let us pledge to free India from poverty, dirt, corruption, terrorism, casteism, communalism and create a 'New India' of our dreams by 2022," he said.
Modi also appealed to the masses to work shoulder to shoulder in creating the "India that our freedom fighters would be proud of".
Mahatma Gandhi gave the 'Quit India' call on August 8, 1942, and with masses coming together the following day the movement began to uproot British colonial rule from India.
