SC shifts student suicide case to Delhi HC

The Supreme Court on Monday transferred the case relating to the suicide by Amity Law School student Sushant Rohilla to the Delhi High Court.

A bench of Justice A.K. Goel and Justice U.U. Lalit shifted the case.

This was after the apex court had earlier taken suo motu cognisance of a letter written by a friend of Rohilla blaming the Amity authorities for his suicide on August 10, 2016.

The apex court had earlier said it would examine whether there was an "element of suspicion" that the incident took place due to "harassment".

Raghav Sharma, a friend of the deceased and a fourth year law student, said Rohilla, 20, was depressed over the prospect of not being allowed to take the examination by the college due to poor attendance.

Sharma said Rohilla could not attend classes for some time due to various reasons, including poor health.

Sharma's letter sought direction from the court to order a probe by an independent committee into the suicide.

Alleging harassment by his teachers, his classmates too had taken to the social media and launched protests at the campus after his death to demand action against his professors, two of whom have since resigned.
