Veteran journalist and former News Editor of Press Trust of India (PTI) Pradip Chowdhury has passed away at a private hospital here following a cardiac arrest, family sources said. He was 64.

Chowdhury, who died on Thursday, is a widower and is survived by two daughters.

He was admitted to hospital with brain damage last month.

An alumnus of Calcutta Boys School and Presidency College, Chowdhury -- popular in journalistic circles as PC -- joined PTI in 1979, and retired as its News Editor in Kolkata in 2014 after 35 years of service.

He had a brief stint as the agency's Islamabad correspondent.

Early in his career, Chowdhury was also posted as PTI's Gangtok bureau manager for some time.

Known for his impeccable writing and editing skills and erudition, Chowdhury was, for years, considered a pillar of the agency's eastern Indian desk here.

A voracious reader, his interest ranged from architecture to history, music, and fine arts.

Equally adept at the brush and the lens, the versatile man was also a guitarist and fond of writing limericks. His blog on photoshop had a large following.
