A Malaysian court has charged six suspected militants with promoting acts of terrorism, a media report said on Friday.

The six men were charged on Thursday by the Sessions Court in Kedah state's capital city of Alor Setar, the Malaysian Star reported.

A former Kumpulan Mujahidin Malaysia (KMM) militant group member, Murad Halimmuddin Hassan, 49, was detained in 2001 for trying to steal firearms from a police station in Kedah state.

The others charged were Murad's son Abu Daud, 25, Royal Malaysian Air Force personnel Nor Azmi Jalani, 28, Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, 29, and Hadharami Hashim, 38, and Ali Saifuddin, 28, from Indonesia.

Upon conviction, the men could be jailed for up to 30 years or fined. Their assets could be confiscated if proven to have been used for terrorism activities.

The court offered no bail to the accused and fixed May 31 for the verdict.
