Students at a British University are calling for the removal of cricket legend Imran Khan as their honorary chancellor over his continued absence in attending university ceremonies.

The cricketer-turned-politician did not attend a single graduation ceremony in Bradford University since 2010, Asian Lite reported.

The university's students union has now floated a motion to drop Imran Khan from the top post. The motion will be voted on by the union next month.

Imran Khan was appointed to the post in December 2005 and is the fifth chancellor of the university since its inception in 1966.

The university defended Imran, its chief executive Brian Cantor asking students to show sympathy.

"Our chancellor has a major political role in Pakistan, a country which has serious problems with terrorism, education and poverty," Cantor said in a statement.

"While I understand that it is frustrating for students that Imran Khan has not attended an award ceremony at Bradford for some time, I have urged students to be sympathetic to the situation in Pakistan and the responsibility Khan has to improving the state of the country," he added.
