Sushma Swaraj under observation at AIIMS

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who has suffered kidney failure and is waiting for a transplant, on Saturday was under close observation of a team of top doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for her high sugar levels.

According to doctors, the minister needed to be monitored as her sugar level was mostly on the high side.

Earlier, on Sushma Swaraj's choosing, the doctors had allowed her to come to the hospital every morning and return home in the evening after undergoing the required tests.

However, as her diabetes levels are high she has been admitted again to a special ward on the ground floor of the Cardio Thoracic and Neuro Sciences (CN) Centre of AIIMS, doctors said.

"She is under the close observation of a team of doctors constituted to conduct her treatment. Till the time the transplant is performed after getting a suitable donor it is important that the minister (Swaraj) is in a normal condition," a senior doctor, familiar with the minister's treatment updates, told IANS.

Sources said that Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda visited Sushma Swaraj on Friday evening and inquired about her health.

The team of top doctors constituted for the treatment of Sushma Swaraj includes, Head of Endocrinology Nikhil Tandon, Head of Pulmonary Medicine Randeep Guleria, Chief of Cardio Thoracic and Head of Nephrology Sandeep Mahajan.

According to the doctors, the minister will have to wait at least 15 days more till a perfect matching donor is found. The chances of having a donor within blood relation has been ruled out as the minister's daughter is also a diabetic.

Several people on social media platforms have voiced interest in donating their kidney to Sushma Swaraj, after she tweeted on Wednesday about her kidney failure and the need to undergo a kidney transplant.

A parliamentarian from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, has also expressed his desire to donate his kidney.

In a letter to Sushma Swaraj, Rao said: "I am very sorry to hear about your health problems and that you have been diagnosed with renal failure. As AIIMS doctors have advised you for the renal transplant at the earliest, Madam I shall be very grateful (if) you kindly accept my offer for donation of my kidney to you for transplant."

The 73-year-old MP hails from Narasaraopet constituency in Andhra Pradesh.

The minister, who was admitted on Nov 7, is undergoing dialysis whenever required.
