A special envoy of Syrian President Faisal Meqdad called on Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari Monday to brief him on the current situation in Syria, the foreign ministry said.
Zardari, while reaffirming the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, emphasized the need to respect the "democratic aspirations of the Syrian people", Xinhua quoted a Pakistani statement as saying.
The president also expressed concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria and stressed the need for a broad national dialogue and political reconciliation.
The president urged the international community to support peaceful resolution of the Syrian crisis through dialogue.
