Taliban guerrillas mounted a brazen attack Thursday on a building adjoining the Kabul International Airport (KIA) in Afghanistan, police said.

The rebels used rocket launchers and heavy weapons to target the securitymen at the airport, reported Xinhua citing a police official.

"The fighting is ongoing, we cannot provide information on the casualties," the official said.

"One militant detonated a car bomb at the gate of a complex where dozens of under-construction apartment buildings are located, injuring one policemen and enabling other militants to seize one of the buildings," the police official told Xinhua.

Shortly after the attack, Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility for the attack.

"The fighting and rocket propelled grenade (RPG) firing on airport started after the heavily armed militants took over a building in Qasaba locality in northern part of airport at around 4.30 a.m.," the official said.

Several rockets hit the airport and at the least two big explosions occurred near the seized building.

"The terrorists in Qasaba were surrounded by security forces and will be killed soon. No damage to the airport, no casualty," Seddiq Seddiqi, interior ministry spokesman, said in his twitter account.
