Three passengers were killed and around 50 injured when the engine and four coaches of a passenger train derailed here in Maharashtra Sunday, police officials said.

The accident took place near Nagothane, around 100 km south of Mumbai, when the crowded coaches of the Diva-Sawantwadi train jumped the tracks along with the engine around 9.40 a.m.

"Till 11 a.m., we have three deaths confirmed and around 50 injured," said police official D.D. Manjrekar in Raigad district.

Railway officials said relief and rescue trains were sent to the accident site from Thane and Mumbai.

Train traffic on Konkan railway network has been paralysed, a Central Railway official said in Mumbai.
