Three computer scientists at Microsoft Research India were named as 2016 Fellows of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) along with 50 others from all over the world for fuelling advances that are transforming science and society, Microsoft said here on Friday.
They are Ravi Kannan for his work in theoretical computers science, Venkata N. Padmanabhan for networked and mobile computing systems, and Ganesan Ramalingam for static programme analysis.
Kannan, who is a principal researcher at Microsoft Research India (MRI), has earlier received the 2011 Knuth Prize for developing influential algorithmic techniques aimed at solving long-standing computational problems.
Padmanabhan, also a principal researcher at MRI, has projects spanning a range of areas and bagged the 2016 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize. He is an ACM Distinguished Scientist and is serving on the ACM SIGCOMM Industrial Liaison Board.
Ramalingam, a principal researcher at MRI has conducted research in programming languages, tools, static programme analysis, formal methods, etc.
Besides India, the other fellows hail from different organisations in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, China, Switzerland and Italy among others.
They were selected by their peers from leading universities, corporations and research labs for contributions in diverse areas like cloud computing, computer security, data science, Internet routing and security, mobile computing, spoken-language processing and theoretical computer science.
The ACM will formally recognise all the 2016 fellows at its annual awards event in San Francisco in June 2017.
