The maximum temperature in Delhi touched 45.7 degrees Celsius Thursday, the highest for the month of May in the last 10 years, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Thursday's maximum temperature was six notches above what is average for this time of the season. The second highest temperature recorded in the month of May in the last 10 years was when the mercury touched 45.4 degrees Celsius in 2010.

The highest recorded temperature in May was 47.2 degrees Celsius in 1944.

The minimum temperature early Thursday, too, settled five notches above average at 31.4 degrees Celsius.

Similar weather conditions are expected Friday as the weather office has said the heat wave would continue to sweep across the city.

The maximum and minimum temperatures Friday are expected to hover around 45 and 32 degrees Celsius, an IMD official said.
