Trinamool hits back at Bengal rights panel chief

A day after the West Bengal Human Rights Commission chief Asok Kumar Ganguly accused a section of police of shielding criminals, a Trinamool Congress minister Friday hit back at him, saying commissions are "only to listen and not talk".

"A commission is constituted only for listening and not for talking. But we see the commissions here are speaking too much," said Transport Minister Madan Mitra.

Observing that there was a glaring rise in disorder under the Mamata Banerjee regime, Ganguly Thursday had claimed: "Police meant for preventing crimes, have been seen in many instances, shielding and helping criminals".

Mitra also made fun of Ganguly for his remarks "May we have a Kamduni in every nook and corner".

The former Supreme Court judge's comment came in the wake of the people of the village in North 24 Parganas district rising in unison demanding death penalty for the perpetrators of a brutal gangrape and murder of a teen.

"He (Ganguly) says we need more Kamdunis. What does he mean by that? Does he want there should be more incidents like the one in Kamduni?" quipped Mitra.

The commission and the Banerjee government have been virtually at war with Ganguly of late being vocal in deriding the regime.
