Two people were arrested in Supaul district on Friday for abetting the suicide by a widow, who was allegedly having an affair with her close relative living nearby.
The two persons were part of a panchayat which insulted and humiliated the woman and also imposed a fine of Rs. 11000 on her and the man she wanted to marry.
Pipra police station officer-in-charge Chandan Kumar said the two men had been sent to jail.
Anita Devi, 35, a mother of three children, was allegedly having an affair with her late husband's close relative in Lalpur village.
"After Anita was caught along with her late husband's uncle Dhansi Sharma on last Saturday, a village panchayat meeting was called in which both urged the panchayat to allow them to marry. But the panchayat refused permission. At another panchayat meeting on Wednesday, she was humiliated and a fine was slapped on them," a villager said.
Anita's husband had died three years ago.
