Two people have been arrested for cheating an employee of the Rajya Sabha and an employee of the transport ministry by withdrawing money after getting their debit card details, police said on Thursday.
Jawahar Prasad, who works in the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, and Sushma Kumari, an employee of the ministry of road transport and highways, were cheated in January.
Sandeep Kumar Gupta, 27, and Dilip Kumar, 36 -- both residents of Jharkhand's Giridih district -- were arrested for cheating the two government employees by posing as employees in the Prime Minister's Office.
Police said they were arrested from their native place -- Gupta on September 30 and Dilip Kumar on October 7.
"Dilip Kumar managed to get debit card details of both the government employees on the pretext that their cards and account details were required due to a new policy in the PMO," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav.
"They then withdrew Rs.32,000 from Jawahar Prasad's account and Rs.13,000 from Kumari's account," he said.
Dilip Kumar told police that he used to call potential targets from his mobile phone.
"He would cunningly obtain debit card details from the unsuspecting targets on the pretext of calling from the PMO. Thereafter, he used to transfer the amount in his account," the official said.
"Once the amount was transferred in Dilip Kumar's account, he used to sell the card details to Gupta and his other associates after charging a commission," he said.
"Gupta joined Dilip Kumar's group to earn quick money by using this modus operandi," the official added.
