Two young workers were killed here on Tuesday while working in an underground sewerage tank, police said.

Subham Nama Sarkar, 20, fell ill after inhaling poisonous gas. After Mangal Rabi Das, 17, another worker, jumped into the tank to save him, both died, West Tripura district police chief Abhijit Saptarshi said.

The central government run National Buildings Construction Corp Ltd (NBCC) had been executing the sewerage scheme. A police officer said legal action would be taken against the NBCC.
