Former Congress MP Jagdish Tytler Thursday withdrew from the party's internal race for Lok Sabha candidature from the North East Delhi parliamentary constituency.

"He has withdrawn from the primaries after the intervention of the party high command," a party source told IANS.

Sources said Tytler's candidature could have "embarrassed" the Congress because of his alleged involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

His candidature was withdrawn for the 2009 elections too.

With his exit, the contest would be between Delhi legislator Rajesh Lilothia and incumbent parliamentarian J.P. Agarwal.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has introduced US-style primaries on an experimental basis in 16 constituencies countrywide - including two from Delhi - in which party workers would elect the candidate to contest the Lok Sabha polls.

In New Delhi constituency, where too primaries were scheduled, it was a walkover for sitting parliamentarian Ajay Maken who was chosen unopposed.

A total of 330 party workers would vote in the March 11 primaries and the result would be out the same day.
