UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned "in the strongest terms" an attack on the Bardo Museum in central Tunis, capital of Tunisia, which reportedly left at least 19 people killed, including 17 European tourists.

The secretary-general on Wednesday "deplores the loss of life," said a statement issued by Ban's spokesman. "He conveys his deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this deplorable act, " Xinhua repored.

"The secretary-general also expresses his solidarity with the Tunisian people and the Tunisian authorities," the statement said.

A group of militants disguised as soldiers entered the Bardo museum through the Tunisian parliament building Wednesday, said media reports.

Seventeen foreign tourists from Italy, Germany, Poland and Spain were among the dead in the most serious attack in Tunisia in years, and 22 others were also injured in the attack, according to the reports.
