The United Nations refugee agency called Wednesday for increasing aid for the Syrian refugees in Jordan, who are going through very difficult conditions.

Two thirds of the Syrian refugees in Jordan live below the poverty line, Antonio Guterres, UN high commissioner for refugees (UNHCR), said at a press conference in Amman, Xinhua reported.

He was referring to the results of a survey conducted recently by the UNHCR in Jordan, which covered 150,000 Syrian refugees.

The refugees in Jordan lack proper heating and electricity and are unable to pay the rent for their houses, Guterres said.

He called for supporting Jordan, which faces problems in the fields of energy, education, health and infrastructure due to the huge influx of the Syrian refugees.

According to official figures, there are about 1.4 million Syrian refugees in Jordan, of whom some 620,000 are registered with the UNHCR.
