Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik on Tuesday said he had sent back for re-examination the list of persons to be nominated for the upper house Vidhan Parishad sent by the government for his approval.

"I have asked the government to submit the contribution of the nominated persons in their respective fields like art, culture, literature, social work and cooperatives. I have further asked the government to seek the report from the police whether the nominated person had been involved in any criminal case," he said.

"It is not turning down the government list; it is the re-examination of the record of the person who is going to be nominated to the upper house since the upper house is meant for persons who maintain outstanding contribution in fields like art, culture, social work and cooperative movement and had no spare time for active politics and their services would benefit the state through their representing the upper house in the state," added the governor while talking to media persons here.

The Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh had on Monday sent a list of nine Samajwadi Party leaders to the governor to fill the vacancies in the upper house of the UP legislature. The nominees include Jitendra Yadav from Ghaziabad, who is a history-sheeter of Kavi Nagar police station.

It is believed that to escape police scrutiny, Jitendra Yadav was being shown a resident of Bulandshahr from where he had contested the last assembly election on a Congress ticket.

The governor was here to attend a religious function at Rishbhanchal on Tuesday. He presented awards to the persons selected by the religious body of Jain disciples, called Rishbhanchal, at their annual function.
