Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has proposed an atomic power plant in the state -- and the central government has reportedly given the go ahead.

A letter to this effect was sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last month and the union government has responded to it positively, an official said Sunday.

The official said the Prime Minister's Office had asked the state to nominate an official to coordinate with the central government on the initial spadework.

The chief minister said in his communication that the power plant could come up near the Ghaghra river.
