Bogota, Feb 20 (IANS/EFE) A US national was arrested on charges of aiding the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the country's largest guerrilla group.
Nicknamed "El Gringo", the American supplied communication equipment and other electronics to FARC, police said in a statement.
He was arrested Thursday.
While the statement did not provide the man's name, local media sources identified him as a missionary named Russell Martin Stendal.
The American's attorney, Eder Castro, told El Tiempo newspaper that his client approached authorities when he learnt that he was under investigation for his alleged ties to the FARC.
The missionary arranged to meet with an investigator and was arrested when he showed up for the appointment, Castro said.
