Warm New Year's eve disappoints revellers, Met forecasts similar January 1

New Year's eve was a disappointment for revellers in the capital, as the city saw the maximum temperature climb five notches above the season's average at 25.1 degree Celsius, unusually warm during Delhi chilly winter.

According to the Met department, the coming week is likely to stay the same.

Unlike the earlier chilly winters, revellers were seen sporting just one sweater and even without it in many parts of the city.

"Today, it was comparatively warm and there was actually no need for woollens. However, I am wearing one just to avoid health problems," said Sikha Rai, a call centre professional, who was seen sporting only a thin sweater.

A 40-year-old man, who works with a media firm, told IANS: "Not just today but we have been witnessing warm days for the last two-three days. It is really weird to have such days in December, when usually the temperature dips below 10 degrees Celsius."

However, Met officials told IANS: "It is not happening for the first time. In fact last year, Delhi witnessed 30 degrees Celsius on December 1. Following that, the entire week city had witnessed maximum temperatures of over 20 degrees Celsius."

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), January 1 is likely to be similar as Thursday, but the sky is likely to be partly cloudy.

The temperature of the day is likely to hover around 24 degrees and 7 degrees Celsius.

"Friday will start with shallow fog. The sky is likely to remain partly cloudy," said an IMD official.

Fog in the national capital on Thursday morning led to the rescheduling of two trains. A total of 10 trains were running late due to fog in other northern parts of the country. No trains were cancelled.

The minimum temperature of the day was recorded 8.2 degree Celsius, a notch above the season's average.

Wednesday's maximum temperature was recorded five notches above the season's average at 25.1 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature settled at 8.5 degrees Celsius, one notch above the season's average.
