Water supply to remain affected till Tuesday due to rise in ammonia

The disruption in water supply here may continue for a couple of more days until ammonia levels at three of the major Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) fall to permissible limits, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) said on Monday.

The DJB stopped water supply to a large part of the national capital on Sunday night after it found an excessive rise in ammonia levels at Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla WTPs.

"Due to the rise of ammonia to 3.8 parts per million (ppm) in the Yamuna river, we had to stop the water supply. Such rise was excessive and could not be treated at the plants. The permissible limit of ammonia in water fit to drink is 0.5 ppm," an official from Delhi Jal Board told IANS.

The affected localities are situated in New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) area, North Delhi, North West Delhi, Central Delhi and part of West and South Delhi.

Some of these localities are: Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid, Civil Lines, Subhash Park, Mukherjee Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Adarsh Nagar, Model Town, Jahangir Puri, Wazirpur Industrial area, Punjabi Bagh, Lajpat Nagar and Kalkaji, among others.

"The water supply has resumed in a few localities at low pressure. We will try to normalise the supply by Tuesday, but in all likelihood it is going to become regular by day after tomorrow only (Wednesday)," the official added.

Water Tankers will be available on demand at phone number 1916, the DJB said in a statement.
