India will ensure that its energy security is not compromised, the government said on Thursday in response to queries about US cajoling it to snap oil imports from Iran.

The US State Department has asked countries buying crude oil from Iran to cut imports by November 4 this year or face tough US sanctions.

Additionally, US Ambassador to United Nations Nikki Haley, who is on a two-day visit to India, on Wednesday reiterated the US position in a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to reports.

"We feel Iran is a traditional partner. We have historical civilisational ties linkages with Iran...The statement made by the US State Department talks about cutting oil imports from Iran to zero by November 4. It doesn't talk of snapping ties (with Iran)," MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

"It should be noted that the statement is not India specific. It applies to all countries across the world. As far as we are concerned, we will take all necessary steps including engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure our energy security is not compromised," he said.

US President Donald Trump in May this year withdrew his country from the 2015 deal between Tehran and six world powers aimed at stalling Iran's nuclear programme in return for the lifting of some sanctions.

Trump also reimposed the sanctions that were suspended under the Iranian deal.
