The White House is on lockdown after a suspicious package was found near its grounds, media reports said on Tuesday.

Authorities said that they are checking on a suspicious package that was reported at 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, The Washington Post reported.

"Secret Service investigating suspicious package near White House grounds. Road closures in effect," the US Secret Service tweeted.

"US Secret Service is investigating a suspicious package; security perimeter established and members of the public and media are being moved to a safe distance," another tweet said.

The incident happenned around 10.30 a.m. (local time). It was not clear how long the roads would be closed.

This comes after an intruder managed to roam the grounds for more than 15 minutes before being arrested on March 10.
